EPIC Bison Bacon Cranberry Bar is a meat, fruit, and nut bar that’s rich in protein, low in sugar, gluten free, grain free, and absent of both soy and dairy. I decided to pick this primarily due to the fact that I haven’t seen too many products that use bison – and not only that, but it has a bison + fruit combo … interesting choice and also not one that I come across very often.
The packaging definitely matches the brand. It’s clean, sort of rustic and love the look of the shaggy bison on the front. The back is see through, so you can see what this meaty bar looks like. I’m a big fan of this type of see-through packaging – and in this case, it looks just about as I expected – a thick, hunky piece of meat. The plastic can be a little difficult to get off though.
❊ Taste & Texture
The EPIC Bison Bacon Cranberry Bar is surprisingly moist – I was expecting something as dry as jerky but it wasn’t. It also has a slightly tangy / acidic taste, and then there is the unexpected softer texture and sweetness from the cranberries. This bar doesn’t taste like anything I’ve had before, and it takes some getting used to. I still can’t decide if I love it or hate it – but I do know that I would buy it again, mainly because of the nutrition facts.
❊ Serving Size and Nutritionals
Each 43 gram EPIC Bison Bacon Cranberry Bar provides 140 calories from 8 grams total fat (13% of the DV), 250 mg of sodium (10% of the DV), 7 grams of sugars and 8 grams of protein. The ingredient list (available at the EPIC website) includes 100% natural bison, uncured bacon, dried cranberries, lactic acid, celery powder and sea salt.
❊ Price / Worth It?
A 43 gram (1.5 ounce) EPIC Bison Bacon Cranberry Bar cost $2.49 at my local grocery store. The cost seems a little more than I would normally spend on a snack bar, but on sale, it’s worth it because this bar can take the better part of 30 minutes to eat – just chewing it a bit at a time – chugging water – chewing a little bit more … and consequently, I feel satisfied when I’m done.
